  • Founded in 1898 by the Daughters of Charity.
  • Birmingham's oldest Hospital.
  • 338 licensed beds.
  • Delivers more than 3,300 babies a year!
  • Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides care for approximately 490 admissions per year.
  • Serves more than 17,000 inpatients and more than 125,000 outpatients every year.
  • Emergency Department serves more than 28,000 patients annually.
  • St. Vincent's Good Health School reaches more than 42,000 people a year through wellness education.
  • Outreach activities include Mission Days offering programs in low-income housing communities, the St. Louise/United Way Fund supporting United Way agencies and our own associates in need, and support of special events that promote research and awareness of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more.
  • Opened north Alabama's first School of Nursing.
  • Graduated the first three nurses trained in Alabama.
  • Began laying the foundation for a completely digital hospital as early as 1992. Digital capabilities continue to be introduced at St. Vincent's.
    • A project with Emageon, a medical image archiving system, enables St. Vincent's to store and view patient records digitally.
    • Physicians are able to view real time patient info, lab and radiology test results, and images in real time.
    • From our web site at stv.org, visitors can take online health risk assessments, look up topics in the health library, electronically pre-register for hospital procedures, and find information about hospital services.
    • Plans include enabling physicians and nurses to make progress notes at the patient's bedside with handheld computers to other forms of an electronic notebook capable of "reading" handwriting.
  • Places for spiritual refreshment at St. Vincent's include:
    • A Chapel inside the main hospital
    • An Outdoor Chapel and Holy Innocents' Garden
    • An interdenominational prayer room in the Centennial Lodge
    • The "Cross of the Millennium" and "Mother & Child" acrylic sculptures by the famous Frederick Hart
    • "Sisters' Vigil," contemporary bronze sculpture near the Bruno Conference Center representing the four Daughters of Charity who founded St. Vincent's.

    • Bruno Cancer Center expanded
    • New Hospital Library, Physician Lounge and Physician Dining Room added

    • St. Vincent's Sleep Disorders Center, LLC is accredited
    • Introduction of modern robotics in the operating room via the daVinci Surgical System
    • St. Vincent's Academy established (formerly Hospital Education Department)
    • St. Vincent's Chapel Honoring The Bruno Family opens
    • Received $240,000 grant from Daughters of Charity for Hispanic outreach activities
    • Implemented largest wireless LAN in the United States so the hospital is able to access all digital initiatives

    • Jeremiah's Hope Skills Center opens to give people with few job skills the training needed for entry-level medical fields
